Gender Representation in Managerial Occupations in Greater Nashville - Executive Summary

Managerial occupations account for 6.5% of all jobs in the Nashville MSA (64,318 jobs). This is a slightly higher proportion of overall jobs than is observed for the state (5.6%) and nation (5.2%).


From 2013-2018, the number of managerial jobs in the Nashville MSA grew by 31%. This growth rate outpaced state (21%) and national (17%) growth in managerial occupations for the same time period. It also outpaced the growth rate across all occupations in the Nashville MSA (17%).


The projected growth rate for managerial occupations in the Nashville MSA (2018-2023) is 11%, compared to a 9% projected growth rate for Tennessee and 7% for the nation. The projected growth rate for managerial occupations is comparable to the projected growth rate for all occupations in the Nashville MSA (10%).


The median salary for managerial occupations in the Nashville MSA is $89,212. This is 135% higher than the median salary for the regional workforce as a whole ($37,970). It is also 8% higher than the median salary for managerial occupations statewide ($82,514); however, it falls 15% below the national median salary for managerial occupations ($104,963).


Local female representation in managerial occupations is comparable to that of the state and nation. Female workers occupy 41.8% of local managerial positions, compared to 41.5% statewide and 39.3% nationally.


Local female representation in managerial occupations (41.8%) is lower than that of the local workforce as a whole (49.3%), and also the local population (51.2%).

The managerial occupation with the largest number of jobs in the Nashville MSA is General and Operations Managers, comprising 23.4% of all managerial occupations. Women occupy 30.9% of jobs within this occupation.


The managerial occupation in the Nashville MSA with the lowest percentage of female representation is Architectural and Engineering Managers where only 9.7% of jobs are occupied by females. It is followed closely by Construction Managers where just 10.0% of jobs are held by women. The latter occupation also has the least racial diversity with 92.9% of positions held by white workers.


The managerial occupation with the highest percentage of female representation is Education Administrators, Preschool and Childcare Center/Program where 79.6% of jobs are occupied by females. This is also the occupation with the lowest median salary at $47,435.


The managerial occupation with the highest median compensation in the Nashville MSA is Chief Executives at $130,311. Women hold 25.4% of managerial jobs, which places this occupation in the bottom five of the 31 occupations studied for female representation. It ranks next-to-last in racial diversity with 91.0% of jobs held by white workers.
